On the Third Sunday after Easter, we consider passages from the same books of the Bible as last week: 1 Peter for the Epistle, John for the Gospel. The Epistle for today is actually just before last week’s Epistle in 1 Peter 2.1 As we will see, the epistle reading invites us to continue the meditation on the shape that the reality and power of Jesus’ resurrection gives the Christian life that we’ve been considering ever since Easter Day. The Gospel, then, is taken from what New Testament scholars call Jesus’ farewell discourse, his address to and prayer for the disciples after he washes their feet on the night before his betrayal.
